With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Sr. Lucille Souza on May 16th, 2024. Sr. Lucille embraced God’s call, returning home after a life dedicated to service and caring for others.
Her commitment to service stands as an example for us all. Having celebrated 61 years of religious life last August, Sr. Lucille’s profound dedication included three decades as an educator, a decade as Director of the Cabrini Mission Corps, and five years as Provincial of the Stella Maris Province.
From 1998 to 2003, Sr. Lucille served as the Cabrini Mission Foundation’s inaugural CEO and remained a faithful member of its Board of Trustees thereafter. When she wasn’t working, she generously volunteered her time at Holmberg prison, teaching reading to inmates, as well as at Bedford Correctional Facility. She also taught immigrants and refugees.
If that wasn’t enough Sr. Lucille has also served on the Board of Cabrini University, of which she is an alum, on the Board of Mother Cabrini High School, and on the Board of St. Cabrini Home, in West Park.
Sr. Lucille was honored at the 2019 Cabrini Mission Foundation Gala. She closed her remarks with this. “I want to thank my family for their love and support which they have always shown me. I want to thank the leadership of the Missionary Sisters who have inspired me with their faith, and passion in giving our lives for mission so that others might have life.” “ I trust that the sisters and lay collaborators will continue our ministry which is vital and more relevant today than ever before.”
Sr. Lucille, we are profoundly grateful for your life’s work. Your spirit will forever reside in our hearts, mission and endeavors.
