Empowering New York’s Catholic High School Students
In recent years, the Cabrini Mission Foundation launched an annual tuition scholarship program to support New York City high school students attending Catholic schools. While the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus no longer sponsor a school in New York, this program was created to ensure that Mother Cabrini’s enduring legacy of educating the heart remains alive and well.
For the 2025–2026 school year, the Foundation received a record number of scholarship applications. To be eligible, students were asked to submit an original essay reflecting on the importance of Mother Cabrini’s legacy and the relevance of the Cabrini Charism in today’s world.
The Foundation’s Education Committee met several times to carefully review all submissions. Ultimately, fifteen students were selected to receive tuition assistance.
This year’s scholarship recipients represent a diverse group of Catholic schools, including:
St. Clare of Assisi–St. Francis Xavier School; Maria Regina High School; Cardinal Spellman High School; Chaminade High School; St. Saviour Catholic High School; and The Ursuline School in New Rochelle.
One student wrote:
“Mother Cabrini’s courage inspires me. She faced illness, discrimination, and countless challenges, yet she continued to serve with strength and joy. As someone who wants to become a surgeon one day, I look up to her ability to combine compassion with determination. She reminds me that service is not always easy, but it is always meaningful. Her legacy teaches us that every person deserves dignity and care, no matter their background.”
These are truly inspiring words—especially from someone who may one day serve others in the medical profession.
While today’s high school students engage with the world very differently than previous generations, it is deeply encouraging to read their essays and understand where their hearts are. The Cabrini Mission Foundation Scholarship Program will return for the 2026–2027 school year. Applications are accepted annually from September 1 through November 30.
