THE SITUATION

Baguio City, known as the summer capital of the Philippines, has a wonderful climate, scenic views, centers of education and a bustling economy. It attracts a multitude of people from all over the country. Most of the migrants to the city come from poor fishing and farming communities. Often, there are no jobs for their skills in the city. This has left Baguio with a large poverty-stricken population. Consequently, many parents cannot afford to send their children to school and the children are simply left with no choice but to work in order to supplement their parent’s earnings. If influenced by the wrong people they could end up as prostitutes or involved in crime syndicates.

The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart have been collaborating with Save Our School Children Foundation, Inc. (SOSCFI) in trying to combat the conditions faced by many children in Baguio City and the Philippines. Responding to this crisis is a continuation of Mother Cabrini’s mission to serve children in need all over the world.

Your generous contribution will help SOSCFI reach out to the children and their families who are most in need.

The Mission and History of Save Our School Children Foundation, Inc

SOSCFI, a non-profit, non-government organization (NGO), exists to provide basic educational, spiritual, economical, medical development and social services development for low-income families.

The organization saw its beginning with the Zonta Club of Baguio which sponsored and initiated Saturday soup kitchens for the street children in the local market. Several leaders from different sectors of the community were later invited to formalize the organization and to set up a program of services.

In 1986, SOSCFI was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. With a five-year aid from United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF), the organization went on full force with the various programs for empowerment of the street children and their families.

In 1993, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus began collaborating with SOSCFI to expand the focus of the organization from children to families. SOSCFI envisions itself as a service-based organization partnering with communities to build strong and self-reliant families, closely aligning with the mission of Mother Cabrini.

SOSCFI aims to:

  • Provide Non-Formal Education services in basic literacy, math, and related skills to working and indigent children ages 7-14 years.
  • Provide tutorial services in computer and human interest skills to in-school, member children in order to keep up with their academic requirements.
  • Provide educational assistance for in-school, member children.
  • Conduct weekly social enhancement activities.
  • Provide a weekly supplemental meal to member children

An Example of Hope

Officer Bermisa (left) is an example of a young man who has benefited from SOSCFI. He is one of the first graduates of the program. Now he is fully employed, an asset to the community and most importantly able to help his family. These children need your support, love and prayers. Please consider partnering with us as we continue Mother Cabrini’s mission to serve those most in need.
